To be honest I really don’t like coarse hair except for the face.
On the face, they look stylish.
But, other than that I don’t like them, they grow in different directions and they are thick, not as dense but as the circumstance of individual hair.
The biggest problem with coarse hair is that shavers don’t work properly after a few uses.
So, you need to find a shaver that can serve you for long, but they are a bit pricey, don’t worry, they pay their prices.
One thing to remember, these electric shavers are for men, but the “For men” tag doesn’t mean they work only for men.

How do I know I have a coarse beard?
A coarse beard doesn’t mean you have a dense or thick beard. Most people confuse a coarse beard with a dense beard because often people say, to shave a coarse beard and thick you need a powerful shaver.
Coarse hair means an individual hair has wider circumstances or individual hair is thicker than normal hair.
A thick beard means you have a dense beard. A thick beard can be a coarse beard or a normal beard.
To qualify as a coarse beard, individual beard hair should be strong and normal blades don’t work well.
Another indicator that you have a coarse beard is that the blade got blunt quickly and you need to change blades and foil more often.
A disposable razor is the worst choice for a coarse beard because blades wear out quickly and this costs a lot in the long run.
How to assess your beard?
- Check density – if you can easily see the patches mean you don’t have a thick beard. It is easier to see when you have shaved because long beards look the same everywhere.
- Hair trype – See whether you have hard and strong beard hair or normal hair. It can be dense or normal. If you have hard hair It means you have a coarse beard.
- Skin type – When you are assessing your beard make sure you also know about your skin type because you want to choose the right electric shaver for you. For example, for sensitive skin, I prefer foil shaver over rotary.
Buying Guide – Choosing Best Electric shaver for Coarse Beard
Before buying an electric shaver for coarse hair for men, you need to check these features in an electric shaver. If your electric shaver has all these features, then it can easily cut coarse, thick, and dense hair.
1. Powerful motor
Coarse hairs are hard and thick. You need a powerful motor to cut them easily. At least aim for more than 10,000 CMP. Although you can easily find 14,000 CMP motors.
You can see a significant difference between the shaving quality of basic shavers such as the Braun series 3 and Braun Series 9 or Panasonic Arc 5.
The powerful motor becomes even more important if you have a coarse dense beard. Although shavers with high performance are a little bit expensive but in the long run they also save lots of money because normal shavers wear out quickly.
There are lots of shavers with a very powerful motor to choose the best motor in an electric shaver you check the motor performance comparison chart.
2. Long battery life
Shaving and cleaning of coarse hair sometimes take time.
Cutting coarse hair also needs more power, so always look for long battery life and fast charging shaver.
Most batteries take overnight to charge. But, You can easily find fast charging and a long battery shaver.
There are plenty of shavers that have great battery life such as Braun Series 9 takes just 1hour to charge and gives 1 hour of shaving time.
To get the best battery life possible in an electric shaver you can check the battery life comparison chart.
3. Sharp blades
Hypoallergenic and sharp blades are must-see features. Often people don’t think about it. You need sharp blades to prevent tugging and plucking,
For smooth and effortless shave sharp blades are needed.
Without sharp blades shaver can yank beard this becomes more important when you are shaving the tough beard.
4. Pop up trimmer
Trimmers are for convenience.
Sometimes you need to shave places where there are long hairs such as the armpit and private areas.
Long hairs aren’t convenient to cut with a shaver.
You need a trimmer. Some good-quality shaver brands, such as Braun, Panasonic, and Philips include trimmers with them as pop up.
But you can also get a separate trimmer head such as with Braun Series 7 7085cc.
5. Wet and dry
Make sure the shaver you have chosen can be used wet and dry. Wet shaving can make a big difference in the closeness of shaving. Wet shavers don’t irritate the skin as dry shavers do.
Although it is not necessary to use shaving cream with an electric shaver, if you have sensitive skin this will help to cut coarse hair without irritating skin.
6. Waterproof
This feature is essential if you want to shave pubic hair. Because most people found it comfortable in the shower to shave pubic hair.
But for the safety of the shaver, it should be waterproof because no one knows when the shaver will slip in the bathtub.
A waterproof shaver is very easy to clean and maintain.
7. Pivot flexible head
For you, it might seem a little bit technical but it’s not.
Pivot flexible head helps you to shave on any part of the body smoothly. It adjusts itself according to the shape of your skin and glides over effortlessly.
Pivot head becomes very important when you are shaving your neck, especially around Adam’s apple.
Hard to reach areas such as the neck, chin armpit, and down there becomes nothing when you have this feature in your shaver.
8. Cutting element
More the cutting element doesn’t mean always better the performance, sometimes it becomes too bulky, such as Panasonic Arc feel sometimes. But, it gives a quick and close shave.
5 Best Electric Shavers for the Coarse Beard (Review)
This is a detailed review of the 5 best electric shavers for coarse hair for men. These electric shavers have been chosen based on the buyer guide we mentioned above. Some of the shavers can be expensive but if you have coarse hair then believe me they are worth their price
1. Braun Electric Razor Series 9 9370cc
Braun Series 9 is the evolution of series 5 and 7./
Series 5 and 7 have satisfied thousands of people and now they have provided series 9 with more advanced and enhanced features.
This series has many amazing features that provide a close, efficient, gentle, and flawless shave.
Although, this is not the most advanced electric shaver they offer. Braun Series 9 9370cc has newer versions such as 9385cc and 9390cc. But the only difference between them is this shaver has 4 shaver blades and 9385cc and 9390cc have 5 shaver blades.

The other non-significant difference is that its battery life is 50 minutes and newer versions have 60 minutes.
All the other features are almost the same. Other than that I found no difference in their performance. They both cut coarse beards with the same efficiency and interestingly with this one you can save a couple of bucks.
This one is a little bit inexpensive and gives the same performance as its higher version that is why I picked this.

Its four blades cut more hair in one stroke save lots of time for you and sonic vibration provides maximum comfort.
If you have sensitive skin that you don’t worry about, it has titanium-coated blades which are less likely to cause any allergic reaction such as razor bumps and razor burns.
Who should buy it?
It is best for men who love fast, smooth, and convenient shaves. Its battery life is amazing and with an ergonomic design, it is also a suitable shaver for travelers. You can also use it on your pubic hair.
Who should avoid it?
This one is overpriced. If you find this expensive, then you can switch to Panasonic Arc5 or Norelco. Performance is amazing and you can save $50-$100.
2. Panasonic Arc5 Electric Razor ES-LV95-S
Panasonic Arc5 is also a high-end electric shaver.
Its design is extremely good and elegant.
If you want a little inexpensive alternative to Series 9, this can be a good pick, I found Pansonic Arc5 one of the best razors for the coarse beard.
Manual cleaning of this shaver is easy unlike Braun Series 9 9370cc, so cleaning stations are not necessary. Although this one comes with a cleaning station if you want to skip the cleaning station you can go with Panasonic ES-LV65-S.

Even after including cleaning, it is still inexpensive than Braun Braun Series 9 9370cc.
Panasonic Arc5 ES-LV95-S has a very powerful linear motor with 14,000 CMP which comes with extremely sharp blades that are honed 30-degree. It helps to cut tough beards smoothly and closely.
The Built-in pop-up trimmer helps to detail mustaches, sideburn, and beard. Although having a Built-in pop-up trimmer is not special because almost every shaver includes a trimmer t this price.

It is a wet and dry shaver you can use with or without shaving cream. You can also use it in or out of the shower. This becomes so much useful for a person who has sensitive skin.
Pros and cons
Who should Buy it?
It is good for men with coarse hair and sensitive skin. It shaves fast and efficiently. It is suitable for travelers, however feels a little bit bulky but still a good choice for travel. Its battery package is also amazing.
Who should avoid it?
It has 5 cutting blades, so it is not suitable if you want to use it to shave pubic hair or armpit. Otherwise best, if you are only interested in shaving a beard. I will prefer it over Braun series 9
3. Philips Norelco Shaver 9000 Prestige

Philips Norelco 9000 is the newer version of the series 8000.
This is the most advanced of Philps Norelco shavers, the only thing that I don’t like about it, it is expensive. But, performance-wise no other rotary shaver can compete with it.
It is a decent rotary electric shaver with precision and closeness.
The holding experience is amazing, you are going to love it when you will hold it in your hand, well balanced and perfect size.
Advanced technology cuts more hair with more closeness quickly and efficiently.

Manual cleaning can be easier than this, you just need to push the button and ut it under running water. If you are shaving with shaving cream don’t tap it over a hard surface.

Its BeardAdapt Sensor adapts with beard really well, Series 8000 SensoTouch 3D was not that good.
Smart beard styler is designed to prevent skin irritation and an LED battery indicator is also very convenient.
Undoubtedly, it is one of the best rotary electric shavers for coarse beard, but a little bit expensive but for coarse beard, you need the best shaver.
Although there is a less expensive version of Norelco shaver Shaver 6900, 7000, I found this is best.
Who should buy it?
It is best for men who like the best product and have a little bit bigger budget. Normally I don’t prefer a rotary shaver for sensitive skin, but the clause of its BeardAdapt Sensor makes it best for sensitive skin.
Who should avoid it?
If you have a little bit tight budget then you should avoid it and go with its other series such as 6900, 7000 one of them is added below.
4. Braun Electric Razor for Men, Series 7 7085cc

Braun Series 7 is another iconic addition to the electric shaver world by Braun.
Some people, like me, just love Braun electric shavers. They provide a premium feel when you hold it, Although, its newest and most advanced Series is series 9, this is a bit expensive.
So, if you don’t have the budget to buy Series 9, you can go for series 7 or Panasonic Arc 5.
Series 7 also has a sensitive skin element and is designed to provide a smooth and close shave.
It also has AutoSense technology that can read and adapt the beard. Its AutoSense technology is as good as Philips Norelco series 9.
The one thing that I love about it, its head is really flexible, you can even feel it when you go neck to chin.
It had 2 foil and 3 cutting elements so it is not bulky. You can use it down there too.

It comes with a trimmer head which is very easy to swap.

Performance is excellent with a flexible head that can easily follow the contour.
Provide an amazing shaving experience with or without shaving cream.
This shaver works effortlessly on coarse and bristles hair growth and clear 3 days stubble hair growth.
Pros and cons
Who should buy it?
It is more useful for those who also like to shave other body parts such as the armpit, pubic hair, etc. It is compact and lightweight, its battery backup is also amazing so it is ideal for traveler men.
Who should avoid it?
If you want a shaver only for the face then you can go 4 or 5 cutting elements. They can save you a couple of minutes. Although, they also cost little but more.
5. Philips Norelco Shaver 3800, S3311/85
Philips Norelco shaver 3800 is a mid-range compelling shaver with a vibrant design.
It has a few interesting features and it is budget-friendly. I
This is a good budget-friendly alternative to the high-end Philips models. If you want a rotary shaver and can’t buy Philips series 9000 Prestige then this one is best.
Although it is not as good as Prestige, But it does a great job in shaving coarse hair. It is powerful and does not yank hair.
It has three blades, a shaving head with 5 direction head movement. This reaches the face at an ideal angle and adjusts to the curve of the face and neck.

It has smooth contact with skin which prevents any irritation. you can use it wet or dry as per your convenience. Although, it can irritate your skin if you have sensitive skin.
It doesn’t have beard sense technology that is why it causes razor burn on sensitive skin with a fine beard. So, only if you have a coarse beard.
Its pop-up trimmer is very useful for shaving a long beard and managing sideburns.

This is one of the most convenient shavers which is easy to hold and easy to clean, or should we say easiest to clean, one-touch open, no complicated process.
Open it and put it under running water, that’s it.
Pros and cons
Who should buy it?
Good for a person with a tough beard and normal skin. It is the best budget-friendly shaver in this list. So, if you have a tight budget, then you can get better than this one.
Who avoids it?
If you have sensitive skin then you should go with Philips series 9000 Prestige and if you want a foil shaver then Panasonic ARC5.
How do you shave coarse hair?
To shave a coarse beard follow these steps
- Soften the Hair Before Shaving – The first and most important step is to soften the beard properly.
- Hold the razor at perpendicular and apply little to no pressure
- Move the shaver in a clockwise direction and then anticlockwise. Sometimes Mix circular motion with short and controlled up and down strokes if you are using a rotary shaver.
- Hold the razor perpendicular and apply little to no pressure and a Short and controlled stroke against the direction of the hair growth if you are using a foil shaver.
- Stretch the skin with your free hand.
- Start with sensitive skin areas first such as the neck and chin. Because the razor may get heated.
- Apply post-shaving creams
What is the best electric razor for an older man?
Older men generally have coarse and hard beards. Skin is also loose and sometimes in the fold. So, I think Braun Electric Razor Series 9 9370cc is the best electric razor for older men. If you think it is a little bit costly then you can go with Panasonic Arc5 Electric Razor ES-LV95-S.
How do I soften my coarse beard before shaving?
- Shower with warm water 5 to 10 minutes before shaving
- Exfoliate your skin
- Soak the towel with warm water and hold it against the skin for 2-3 minutes
- Apply 2 to 3 drops of pre-shave oil
- Apply shaving cream
Shave against the grain if you go to the same place again then apply shave cream again.
Final thought
These shavers may not be the best, but they are definitely the right shaver for coarse hair.
No matter if you are a man or woman you can use them. But don’t use the used one or of your partner.
If you are a woman then choose a foil electric shaver. They are best for you.
If you want to shaver pubic hair or armpit hair then also choose the foil they provide more versatility, but rotary or foil both are equally good for coarse hair
If you want to just give a touch then you can choose dry shaving, otherwise, for long coarse hair, wet shaving is recommended.
Happy shaving
